Treating Broken Capillaries with Broadband Light Therapy

Broadband light therapy, or BBL, is a popular and effective method for removing visible broken capillaries from the skin. It is also frequently used to remove freckles and age spots, and to improve uneven skin texture. It is cleared by the FDA and requires no surgery or downtime. Many individuals actually schedule a treatment during their lunch break and return to work after the treatment. Depending on the severity of the broken capillaries, treatments can be as short as a few minutes or as long as half an hour.

Broadband light therapy works by heating the upper layers of the skin. It should not be confused with traditional laser therapy because the light is not as intense. The heat will cause the unwanted small blood vessels to dry up and disappear, reducing the redness in broken capillaries. The heat will cause the unsightly skin cells to dry up and flake off. This allows healthier, new skin cells to rise to the surface, restoring it to its natural beauty.

Broadband light therapy is commonly used to treat facial skin; however, BBL is not limited to facial treatments. It is also commonly used on the neck, chest, shoulders and hands. Most any area of the body can be effectively treated.

The newest machines that are used for BBL treatments are equipped with advanced cooling mechanisms. This minimizes the discomfort associated with the use of high-energy treatments.

Those receiving treatment can expect to see some mild redness, similar to a minor sunburn, in the area that was treated. This should clear up within a couple of days. For most people, it clears up after just a few hours. The broken capillaries should begin to disappear within two weeks and gradually improve over the next couple of months. However, blood vessels are deeper than things like sunspots, and it may take three to five treatments to make them completely disappear, although this will vary from person to person.

Immediately following treatment, patients should stay out of direct sunlight and apply sunscreen until the treated area is completely healed. Our healthcare providers can provide more details regarding how to prepare for treatment and how to care for the skin following treatment.
