AFT Skin Resurfacing for Wrinkles, Rosacea and More

Advanced Fluorescent Technology (AFT) is one of the newer forms of light therapy. Unlike a laser, AFT uses a broad range of light wavelengths to deliver energy to the skin to treat fine lines, liver spots, discolorations, spider veins, and rosacea. AFT is a type of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

IPL Therapy

IPL therapies, including AFT, deliver a burst of intense, high-energy light to the face. The light is preferentially absorbed by darker-pigmented areas of the face, such as sunspots, rosacea reddening, and spider veins. The energy of the light heats up and destroys the pigment or capillaries that are the cause of the blemish. The heat of the light is also absorbed to a limited degree by the unpigmented areas of the skin, causing the skin to tighten up. The heating effect also induces the skin to produce more collagen.

Over time, the skin becomes smoother, clearer, and younger-looking in response to each treatment. ATF treatments are particularly good at producing a glowing, even skin tone because the device produces a highly consistent energy output and can target a wide range of different levels of discoloration. Dark spots, light spots, red spots, even purple spots are all eliminated in the same treatment with no downtime or recovery period.

Preparation

At least two weeks before a treatment, begin diligently protecting the skin from the sun. At least a week before treatment, stop taking agents such as St. John’s wort that make the skin highly sensitive to light. Do not apply creams or lotions that contain retinol or alpha hydroxy acids to the skin for 48 hours before treatment.

What to Expect

A full facial treatment usually takes around 30 minutes. Most people experience very little discomfort during treatment. If necessary, a local anesthetic cream can be applied to reduce discomfort. After treatment, patients can immediately resume their regular activities. There may be some minor reddening of the skin for an hour or two after the treatment. The skin should be carefully protected from the sun for several weeks after each treatment. Otherwise, there is no downtime or recovery period. The skin will not blister or peel. It will just gradually look better after each treatment.

How Long

Most people need to undergo a series of six to eight treatment sessions to achieve their desired results. Treatments are most commonly scheduled every two to four weeks apart to allow the skin time to respond to the last treatment.
